During the eighth century BC, the Northern Kingdom of Israel experienced a period of unprecedented economic growth. But this financial boom wasnt enough for Israels elite. To increase their already robust profits and fund their already upscale lifestyles, they leveraged their powerful positions to exploit their poor neighbors. They often did so under the guise of worship. Their actions violated Gods laws, trampled Gods people, and defamed Gods name. God took exception to Israels acts and commissioned Amos, a farmer from the Southern Kingdom of Judah, to speak on his behalf. Through this prophet, God stood up to the rich and spoke up for the poor. He condemned Israels religious, economic, and judicial leaders and their practices. He pronounced impending judgment and proclaimed future salvation.
